A tense situation at Carrboro High School has come to a safe conclusion after law enforcement issued an “all clear” following reports of gunshots heard near the campus earlier in the day. Officials confirmed that the school has resumed normal operations, with students set to be dismissed at the usual time of 4 p.m.
The incident began shortly before noon when the sound of gunshots was reported somewhere outside the school grounds. As a precaution, Carrboro High School immediately initiated a lockdown, bringing students and staff indoors while local authorities responded to investigate. During this time, nearby schools, including Culbreth Middle School and Frank Porter Graham Bilingue, also entered secure mode to ensure student safety.
The situation caused understandable alarm, especially as some students who were outside for lunch scattered from the area after hearing the noise. Law enforcement worked quickly to secure the campus and surrounding areas, while families were directed to gather at a designated reunification point at the Town of Carrboro Public Works facility.
By early afternoon, authorities determined there was no imminent danger. Carrboro High School transitioned from lockdown to secure mode, allowing classes to continue indoors while investigations continued. Eventually, the “all clear” was given, confirming that no shots were fired on campus and, most importantly, no injuries were reported.
School officials acknowledged the emotional impact of the incident and reassured families that safety protocols were followed effectively. Parents who wished to pick up their children were permitted to do so through standard check-out procedures.
While the day brought fear and uncertainty, the coordinated response from school staff and first responders ensured the safety of everyone involved. Further communication from school leadership is expected as the community reflects on the incident and returns to normalcy.
